Google I/O, Google’s annual developer conference, is just around the corner, kicking off on May 14th with a livestreamed keynote. Similar to Apple’s WWDC and Microsoft’s Build, this event showcases the latest hardware and software updates from Google, including the next iteration of the Android operating system.
New Pixel Phone on the Horizon:
Google often uses I/O to unveil its budget-friendly smartphone line. Following the Pixel 7a in 2023 and Pixel 6a in 2022, rumors suggest the Pixel 8a will be announced this year. Leaks indicate it will retain the same 6.1-inch screen size but boast a smoother 120Hz refresh rate and improved display brightness.
Pixel 8a: Specs and Design
The Pixel 8a is expected to upgrade to Google’s next-gen Tensor G3 processor, the same chip powering the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. However, reports suggest a slightly slower version for the budget model. While ideal for AI tasks, it might not be the best choice for gamers.
Expect minor design tweaks to align with the Pixel 8 series, likely featuring rounded corners.
The starting price for this budget phone is anticipated to be around $500.
Pixel Fold 2: A New Foldable Contender
At I/O 2023, Google boasted the Pixel Fold as the thinnest foldable phone, a title it later lost to the Honor Magic V2. The Pixel Fold features a wider cover screen than the Samsung Galaxy Fold, making it resemble a traditional phone when closed. Leaked images of the Pixel Fold 2 reveal the most significant design change: a protruding camera bump replacing the familiar camera bar present on Pixel phones since the 6 series.
Pixel Fold 2: Display and Design
Rumors suggest a 6-inch external display and a sleeker internal display with reduced bezels compared to the previous Fold. The front-facing camera might also be relocated from the bezel to under the display.
There’s a possibility that the Fold 2 could be the first Pixel phone powered by the Tensor G4 chip.
Timing is Everything:
With the conference approaching, information about the Fold 2 is scarce. Google might still be finalizing the development of both the phone and the Tensor G4 chip, potentially leading to a later launch this year.
Android 15: The Next Big Update:
One thing’s for sure – Android 15 will be unveiled at I/O. Last year saw features like Magic Compose for suggesting replies in apps and Cinematic Wallpaper using machine learning for personalized device customization.
Early developer previews and the beta version of Android 15 offer some insights into the final release. The new Private Space feature allows hiding specific apps, files, or folders, along with their notifications, while your phone is locked. Additionally, Notification Snooze helps declutter your screen by reducing back-to-back notifications during busy group chats.
Pixel phones will be the first to receive Android 15, with other devices likely following soon after. Pixel users can even join the beta program for an early look at the new updates.
The Future of AI:
Google has been consistently releasing new AI features throughout the past year, with a strong focus on generative AI and its potential at last year’s I/O conference. This year’s event is expected to showcase even more innovative AI features, along with plans for their implementation and user accessibility.
Stay tuned for further updates as we cover the biggest announcements from Google I/O on May 14th!
